The day Redd died was a sad day in comedy, indeed.

I primarily remember him for Sanford and Son (which I thought was brilliant), but I am just old enough to remember the classic Redd Foxx "party albums" (recordings of his stand-up act), which were in the day considered outrageously dirty, but nowadays probably nobody would be offended by them. E.g.:



One of my favorite Foxx shticks was a story he told about his service in the Army in World War II. Showing an excellent sense of self-preservation, Foxx was gradually easing himself away from the front lines, until he eased himself right into a general. (I always picture George C. Scott's portrayal of General Patton here.)

“I backed up so far, I bumped into a general. ‘Soldier, why are you running?’ the general asked me. I replied, ‘I am running because I cannot fly.'”

Right I remember my Mom having what they call now a listening party everyone was smoking and listening to his albums and I remember going to see and paid respect to his home in Vegas. I never forget when he Died I was 16 I felt like I knew him.
