Maybe we need to take a fresh, out of the box, approach. I've said all along that the way to bring down healthcare costs is to outlaw insurance, maybe we should put the controversy to bed (and a great many lawyers out of business), by simply outlawing marriage.

It won't hurt lawyers' business at all. People who cohabit will still buy assets together. I am representing one member of a rather elderly couple who decided to shack up together. They split and are trying to divide up property that was acquired while they were together. It's a complete clusterfuck and the lawyers are making a fortune because the couple fucked it up so bad. Plus, there are no easy rules like community property to go by, so each side is seeking an equitable right of reimbursement for contribution to and maintenance of each property that the other is likely to be awarded.
It's just amazing how much marriage simplifies splitting shit up. I'd have never guessed it until I got in this case. Had both been lawyers, they probably wouldn't have made this big a mess, though one never knows.

TTH, quit fu*king with the simpletons' reasoning "skills" by injecting actual "real world" facts, as opposed to glib generalizations, into this alleged discussion. They are just toooooo damn funny while they are quoting the same old b.s. bromides.

Like I said 4 years ago on ASPD, this issue is just about "benny" - specifically medical benefits. Strangely, at my company, if you say your gay, you can put your partner on your medical insurance. If you are straight, you have to be lawfully married.
They use the phrase "Life Partner". I silently chuckle when the HR people stand up and say that phrase.

I dont get why some of these religious nuts cant wrap there head around the legal benefits of marriage and how two people of the same sex could also benefit from being married. It has nothing to do with religion but everything to do with being able to transfer assets legally to the spouse or simplfy division of assets in the case of a break up, being able to have rights in a dire hospital situation as a legal spouse, getting tax benefits and coming under the protections of the laws with regard to domestic abuse and so much more. Denying same sex couples the right to legally marry is discrimination plain and simple. Its nothing more than harrassment of a minority group just as it was years ago when blacks were not allowed to marry white people. By the way about 14-15% of the US are aethiests so citing some religious bible doesnt mean jack shit. Again we have lost sight of the fact that church and state should be separated and all these laws and amendments will eventually be repealled it is just a matter of time.

In the state of texas you do not have to be legally married as I lived with a guy for almost 8 years and we were told we were common law married and he was able to put me as a dependent on his company insurance. By the way your company sounds pretty progressive if thats the case most companies dont allow a gay couple to do that.
