Terry McAuliffe’s crushing defeat in the Virginia governor’s race on Nov. 2 prompted me to
speculate over-optimistically that our national political scene might at last have rid itself of the Clinton gang, which has been a canker of our politics since its leaders began accepting six-figure favors back in 1978.
© Provided by Washington Examiner Hope does not so easily triumph over experience, and the Clintons are still high in the news. They seem likely to remain so even after the stain left by McAuliffe is washed away by the beneficent detergent action of forgetfulness.
Special counsel John Durham’s indictment of Igor Danchenko for lying to the FBI shows that Hillary Clinton was not merely deeply involved in the Russia collusion hoax but that it was almost exclusively her campaign’s invention, concocted by people working first to get her elected president and then, vengefully after her defeat, to undermine the presidency of Donald Trump. Politics is never pure, but the Clintons produce dirt on an industrial scale.
Yet, it is neither the Clinton slime factory nor the cynical hacks who work there that I wish to focus on. It is, rather, a particular aspect of their methods, which the Left has adopted in its fight to impose its grotesque agenda on the nation.
Call it the “never-the-right-time” technique.
As the Monica Lewinsky scandal wound its lugubrious way from revelation to presidential impeachment, Clinton’s henchmen, naturally including McAuliffe, would dismiss salient points raised by Republicans or news reporters as unworthy of discussion, too vulgarly low to be considered. They’d keep up this line of nondebate until events overtook their lofty pretense, at which point they’d switch to suggesting those difficult points were all old news and therefore, again, not worth talking about. Somehow, it was never the right time to examine a statement, revelation, or contradiction; they were always either unmentionable or ancient history.
It’s reminiscent of Oscar Wilde’s unfair witticism that America is the only country to go from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between. With the Clintons, issues that made the boss look bad went from beneath contempt to old hat without an intervening period of thorough examination.
Slipperiness of this sort is a telltale sign of dishonesty, of trying to skate by without a proper focus on, and airing of, controversial subjects. It has become the stock in trade of today’s Left, which pushes its sub-Marxist agenda forward while seeking to deflect public attention from it rather than to explain why it’s a good idea.
As my old Hong Kong acquaintance Bill McGurn noted in his
Wall Street Journal column about the phony culture war, the Left insists it’s uncouth and hateful to raise issues that “liberals have deemed beyond the discussion in polite society, whether it’s abortion, public school curriculums, guns, crime,” etc. Why? Because it’s harder to foist opinions and policies on a country that doesn’t want them by debating them than it is to claim that no decent person any longer doubts them.
Thus, MSNBC’s egregious anchor Joy Reid, among many others, hurls the charge of racism at parents who want to discuss the teaching of critical race theory to grade school children. Doing so is easier than pitting opposing ideas against each other so a democratic decision can be made about the merits or otherwise of instructing white children that they’re irredeemable oppressors and black children that their skin color makes them victims from birth until death.
The
New York Times’s 1619 Project is based on this CRT determinism, and it is designed for incorporation into grade school curricula. Yet the Left pooh-poohs claims that CRT is both appalling and taught in schools.
Don’t be silly, my dear, you don’t know what CRT is. It’s a subject for postgraduate study, not for children. You’re out of your intellectual depth.
If there is a silver lining to the dark cloud of COVID-19, which has cast its shadow over the nation for the past 18 months, it is that by forcing parents to attend to their children’s remote learning, it exposed the Left’s technique of trying to hide the truth until it becomes a fait accompli.
Now, the Left has been rumbled. On Election Day recently, it stood in all its naked cynicism, its deceptions exposed for voters to see. And voters effectively said, “Ah, now we get it. Now we know what you’re doing. You’ve been conning us. You really shouldn't be in power.”
The Left’s Clintonian technique is always "nothing to see here, let’s move on." But the voters replied that there was a lot to see, and it was time for the tricksters to move on.
