You are correct. My mistake. The first impeachment did in fact go to "trial" although the Republican majority allowed no witnesses to be called to testify or documents to be entered. Hardly a "trial" in my opinion.
Same in the second impeachment. No witnesses were called and opted instead to admit into evidence written testimony from Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash. 57 Senators voted to convict.
