Rangers are getting a new Stadium

I for one am excited. I like baseball being played outdoors but those Sunday games at 2 PM from about now till pretty much the end of the season are just brutal. Some sports writers have even said that playing in the Texas heat has hurt us in free agency so if that's true a stadium with a roof could help things.

The Temple is beautiful and has held up well. I'm going to miss it. But, the ownership wanted a roof, and someone was going to give it to them. There were more than a few times I thought about making a mid-summer game, then thought about the heat...ah, screw it.

The affordability of the place is what I'm most concerned about. Upper deck tickets were inexpensive, and you still had good sight lines. Even the Lexus level has affordable, comfortable seats. I hope they don't lose that.

I'm glad they're staying in Tarrant County. The west-siders deserved to keep their team.

The biggest reason Arlington received both AT&T stadium and Globe Life Field is the promise to put businesses around it. Thus far, all the businesses around it: a super Wal-Mart.

They were a top 3 team in attendance when they were making their world series runs a few years back. Houston has a stadium design we are looking for in downtown area, but had terrible attendance when they had a bad team for years.

Does the heat turn people away in the summer? Yes, it does, but putting a winning product on the field trumps the heat. Being in Tarrant County doesn't do them any favors also.

But as the Houston experience shows, being in the population center isn't any guarantee, either. Rangers fan base skews west, and ownership likely didn't want to screw with that.

At least not without material monetary incentive, which wasn't forthcoming from Dallas, despite all the rumors.

While I agree games are rough in the heat, its just a sign of the times and the change of the dynamics of professional sports. Due to the costs, the fan base has really switched from every day joes to corporate and higher income level folks bringing in the majority of the cash flow. They still get families and lower end tickets, but they don't make a ton off that. Its all about season tickets, boxes and advertising/tv revenue. To pull in the big bucks its got to be a pampered experience. Even the players need to be pampered..... no longer are guys tough like the old players of yesterday, also the result of the money involved.

So yeah, they need it to be competitive. Shame they are retiring such a great facility, but if they want to continue to be a force and field a quality team a park like Houstons will help quite a bit. Ultimately they have to have a competitive team to draw, but the new digs will help.

I haven't been to a game in years and this won't change anything. Too much of a schlep out to Arlington. Last time I went it was an hour from home to my seat and an hour and a half back to Dallas, all with no public transportation options. I can get from home to my seats at a Mavs game in 20 minutes and back in 10. Two and a half hours driving for a game is beyond ridiculous.

That's what kills it for my family and me, as well. If the baseball stadium was in downtown Dallas, I'd make the commitment to go to many more games (as we do with Stars / Mavs games).

The only time (now) we attend Rangers games is if the company suite is made available (btw that's the perfect way to enjoy a sporting event in Dallas, Texas on a hot, humid July / August night, kiddies).

Too bad The Globe is being replaced after so few years in service.....in spite of the co$t, prior ownership should have seen the value / wisdom in building a stadium with a retractable roof back then.....oh, well....

I'll likely buy a ticket package once the new palace is built. I backed off before since I did not relish those July and August dates.

Let the Fort Worth Cats have the old stadium. Then onward to steal the Mav's and Stars.
