Your right, in my rush to ding the local nouveau foodie scene, I completely forgot about my good friend Ross's place. One of the few left in town though. Can also mention the Broken Spoke and the new hand-breaded CFS at Catfish Parlor on 183, and perhaps a few others still doing things the correct way. But I really miss places like Good Eats and Gators, to name two places that were run out to make way for less than great replacements. If you ever ate at the original Dirty's in Houston, you'd know what I'm looking for in a CFS.

These days it's gotten to the point that I dread finding any restaurant that I really enjoy. They all either seem to drop what I like from the menu, make some totally insane change to the recipe (like adding jalapeños or habaneros), or just plain closing up. On the last one, been hit with all the reasons -- lost lease, re-inventing to chase the latest fad, just bad business practices.

Sorry for inadvertently hijacking your thread Sue. You can spank me for it later.

Now, how about we all go back to discussing good new places, as intended.

Taking up the original point: Margarita's Mexican Grill at Parmer and McNeil is pretty good. According to Community Impact, the owners were long-time employees of Jorge's. Most of the dishes have both standard Tex-Mex and West-Tex versions, the latter being somewhat more spicy.

Default Not new, but still good food

Just had lunch yesterday at a place on Burnet called Man Bites Dog. Great tasting hot dogs, ended up trying the Cuban Dog.

Also, if you can stomach the drive to Cedar Park and want a good CFS try Lone Star Grill next to the toll road. It's owned by one of the former Lone Star Cafe partners, the food was just as good as I remembered from my youth.

A couple years ago I did a 10 course tasting menu with wine pairings at Olivia. Pricey but was well worth it. Good sized portions and delicious.

I'll also put in a good word for The Foxhole. It is in the old Bennigans building out by Lakeline Mall. Bit upscale, though not quite jacket-required upscale.
I had a yearly excellent steak, and you must try their homemade potato chips.

Despite the name, it is not a strip club or breastraunt.

The Dart Bowl bowling ally in North Austin makes the best CFS in Austin as well as the best beef enchiladas.

That's funny. The one in South Austin has really damn good food for a hole in the wall bowling ally.

If you don't mind small portions and high prices, Odd Duck is pretty good. I estimate it costs between $2-$3 per bite of food there. Despite that, it is delicious.
