$40/K per night is an absurd amount of money. There is no rational explaination why someone would pay that much for an overnight companion when you could have a room full of exceptional ladies for that price--until you understand that in those strata it isn't about the sex. The topic has come up before, often on the DC board. I know ladies in DC who got up to $25K for an evening, and that is sometimes a 6PM to midnight thing with the whole time in public.
For some men it's about the bling and the ego. Showing to their peers (who are trying to do the same thing back to them) "Look what's on MY arm, and look what I paid for her." It's little different from wearing the more expensive watch, the better suit, or driving the faster Lamborghini even though you're stuck in DC rush hour traffic.
In fact, for some of the guys it's all about the price tag--if the lady's price were LOWER they would not be interested.
It's an odd world out there.
